Terms of sale
Last updated: 1 November 2026
These terms apply to every purchase made on vire-books.com by a consumer, that is, someone buying for purposes outside their trade, business or profession. They are drawn up under Italian law, in particular the Italian Consumer Code (Codice del Consumo, Legislative Decree 206/2005), which implements the EU Consumer Rights Directive 2011/83/EU and the EU Sale of Goods Directive 2019/771, and Legislative Decree 70/2003 on electronic commerce. They are available in English and Italian; both versions have the same value. Nothing in these terms limits the rights the law gives you as a consumer.
1. Who you are buying from
Maeyke Kok – VIREBOOKS Via del Pie Calato 9, Vellano, 51017 Pescia (PT), Italy VAT number (P.IVA): IT07036030828 E-mail: mail@vire-books.com
I am also the maker of every product sold here (Art. 49(1)(b)–(c) Codice del Consumo; Art. 7 Legislative Decree 70/2003; Art. 19 Regulation (EU) 2023/988 on general product safety).
2. The products
Every rebound book is a second-hand book with a new, handmade binding. The original text pages are kept, so they can show signs of their age and earlier use, such as yellowed paper, small marks or a previous owner's name. This is part of what the product is and is not a defect. Each listing shows the actual item; if something specific is worth knowing, it is mentioned in the description.
Notebooks are handmade from original book covers and new blank paper.
Every item is one of a kind. When it is sold, it is gone.
3. Prices
Prices are in euro and are the final price: no VAT is charged, because VIREBOOKS uses the Italian flat-rate scheme (regime forfettario, Art. 1(54)–(89) Law 190/2014).
Shipping is added in the cart once you choose the country, and you always see the total price, including shipping, before you pay (Art. 49(1)(e) Codice del Consumo).
4. How you place an order
- Add one or more items to your cart.
- In the cart, choose the country you want it shipped to. You see the shipping price and the total.
- Tick the box to confirm you have read these terms and the Shipping & returns page, and click Checkout. From that moment, the items are reserved for you for 30 minutes.
- On the secure payment page (Stripe), you enter your contact details and address and choose how to pay. You can correct any mistakes there before paying. By clicking the payment button you place an order with an obligation to pay (Art. 51(2) Codice del Consumo).
- The contract is concluded once your payment is confirmed. You then receive a confirmation e-mail with the order details, a link to these terms and the information about your right of withdrawal (Art. 51(7) Codice del Consumo). This e-mail is your record of the contract; I also keep a copy of every order.
If the payment is not completed within 30 minutes, the reservation ends and no contract is made.
5. Payment
Payment is handled by Stripe. Depending on your country, you can pay by card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal, iDEAL, Bancontact or Klarna. I never see or store your card details.
6. Delivery
I ship to the countries of the European Union. Orders are usually posted within 3 working days of payment, and the carrier's estimated delivery time is shown at checkout. You get an e-mail with the tracking details once your parcel is on its way. Details are on the Shipping & returns page.
If I cannot deliver within 30 days of the order, you may give me an extra period to deliver; if I still do not deliver, you may end the contract and get a full refund (Art. 61 Codice del Consumo). The risk of loss or damage passes to you only when you, or someone you name, receive the parcel (Art. 63 Codice del Consumo).
7. Your right of withdrawal
You can withdraw from your purchase within 14 days of receiving it, without giving a reason (Art. 52 Codice del Consumo). You can do this with the withdrawal function on this website, by e-mail or with the model form. The Shipping & returns page explains how it works, what is refunded and who pays for the return.
The right of withdrawal does not apply to custom orders: books rebound or notebooks made to your own specifications (Art. 59(1)(c) Codice del Consumo).
8. Legal guarantee
Every product comes with the legal guarantee of conformity of the Italian Consumer Code (Art. 128 to Art. 135-septies). I am responsible for any lack of conformity that exists when the item is delivered and becomes apparent within two years of delivery (Art. 133). A defect that appears within one year of delivery is presumed to have existed at delivery, unless that is incompatible with the nature of the item or the defect (Art. 135).
If an item is not in conformity, you are entitled to have it repaired or replaced; because every item is one of a kind, a replacement is usually not possible, in which case you can ask for a price reduction or end the contract and get a refund (Art. 135-bis). The signs of age described in section 2 are not a lack of conformity. Please contact me at mail@vire-books.com with your order number and a photo.
9. Custom orders
On the custom order page you design your own rebound book: you choose the book, the bookcloth, the screen-printing ink and pattern, the colour of the lettering and the fonts. Custom orders follow these terms, with the following additions.
- Account. You need a customer account to place a custom order, so you can follow it there.
- The book. You choose a book from my collection, ask me to find a second-hand copy of any title, or send me your own book.
- A book I need to find. If a copy is available second-hand for the price shown on the page, you order and pay straight away. If not, you send a request and I answer within 3 working days. If I find a copy, you get a link to pay, valid for 3 working days. If I don't answer in time, can't find a copy, or you don't pay in time, the request is cancelled and nothing is charged. For a request, the contract is only concluded when you pay.
- Your own book. The price includes a shipping label for sending your book to me. You get the label by e-mail after ordering.
- Price and payment. You pay the full price when you order, including shipping to you (section 5).
- What I make. I make your book according to the design you make on the custom order page: the bookcloth, ink, pattern, vinyl, fonts and lettering you choose. The preview shows how it will look, but it is a guide: colours on a screen can look a little different from the real bookcloth, inks and vinyl, and which part of the pattern ends up on the cover depends on the final size of the book.
- Lettering designed for you. If you choose “design the lettering for me” (at the extra price shown), I make three lettering designs with your colours, fonts and text and put them in your account. You choose one within 7 days and can ask for one round of small adjustments; I then make the final design. If you haven’t chosen within 7 days, I choose one of the three for you, so your book isn’t delayed.
- Delivery. The custom order page shows the expected shipping date when you order.
- Cancelling. You can cancel a custom order free of charge, with a full refund, until I have started on it, using the button in your account. Your account shows when I have started; after that the order can no longer be cancelled. If you chose “design the lettering for me”, the design fee is not refunded once the three designs are in your account.
- No right of withdrawal. Because a custom order is made to your specifications, the right of withdrawal does not apply (Art. 59(1)(c) Codice del Consumo). The legal guarantee (section 8) does apply.
10. Questions and complaints
E-mail mail@vire-books.com. I aim to answer within 2 working days.
If we cannot resolve a dispute, you can use an out-of-court consumer dispute resolution (ADR) procedure (Art. 141 and following, Codice del Consumo). You can also contact the consumer protection centre in your country; within the EU, the European Consumer Centres Network (ECC-Net) helps with cross-border purchases.
11. Applicable law and courts
These terms and every purchase are governed by Italian law. If you live in another country, you keep the protection of the mandatory consumer rules of that country (Art. 6 Regulation (EC) 593/2008). For a dispute with a consumer, the court of the place where the consumer lives is competent (Art. 66-bis Codice del Consumo).
12. Personal data
How I handle your personal data is explained in the privacy notice.
13. Changes
I may update these terms. The version that applies to your order is the one shown on the website when you placed it; the date at the top shows when the terms last changed.
